Understanding Donation Refunds on GiveSendGo

Why a Donation May Be Refunded Automatically on GiveSendGo

Seeing a refund appear without requesting one can be confusing. Automatic refunds happen due to payment rules, verification requirements, or fundraiser status changes, and don't necessarily mean anything was done wrong. Here are the most common reasons.

Reasons a Donation May Be Refunded

The fundraiser was closed If a fundraiser is closed, any donations that haven't been transferred yet are returned to the original givers. This can happen when a fundraiser organizer chooses to refund givers and close their fundraiser, or when a fundraiser is removed for policy or compliance reasons.

The donation was flagged for review GiveSendGo monitors for unusual activity to protect givers and fundraisers. If a donation attempt doesn't pass various checks in place, it may be refunded and removed from the fundraiser total.

The donation was disputed If a giver contacts their bank or card issuer and disputes the charge, the bank may reverse the donation. When that happens, the funds are removed from the fundraiser balance.

Verification requirements weren't met Some fundraisers, particularly those in the Political Campaign category, are subject to additional verification or regulatory requirements. If required information is missing or doesn't match what's on file, donations may be automatically refunded to comply with those rules.

What This Means for You

If you're a giver: Refunded funds are returned to the original payment method you used. Depending on your bank or card provider, refunds typically appear within 7–10 business days. If you'd like to support the organizer, you're welcome to check back later or reach out to them directly for updates.

If you're a fundraiser organizer or recipient: A refunded donation doesn't affect your fundraiser's overall standing or its ability to accept future donations. If you're seeing multiple unexplained refunds, Contact Us with your fundraiser link and we'll review what happened.

See Requesting a Refund if you're a giver looking to request a manual refund on a recent donation.
