Understanding Donation Refunds on GiveSendGo

Understanding Donation Refunds

Seeing a refunded donation appear without ever having requested one or any prior notice can be concerning, whether you’re a giver or running a campaign. Refunds that happen automatically tend to happen due to various payment rules, verification requirements, or campaign status—not necessarily because anything was done wrong. Below are the most common reasons a donation may be returned, along with what it means for everyone involved.

Why Donations are Refunded

When a Campaign Is Closed

If a campaign is closed, any donations that haven’t already been paid out are returned to the original givers. This can happen if a campaign owner or recipient decides to refund their givers and close their campaign or if it’s taken down for other reasons.

When a Donation Is Flagged

GiveSendGo regularly monitors for unusual activity to help protect givers and campaigns. If a donation or a giver's identity can’t be verified, it may be proactively refunded and removed from the campaign total.

When a Donation Is Disputed

Givers can dispute a charge directly with their bank or card issuer if they don’t recognize the transaction on their statement. When this happens, the bank may reverse the donation, removing the funds from the campaign balance.

When a Donation Can't Be Verified

Some campaigns, especially those classified as political, are subject to additional verification or regulatory requirements. If required information is missing, incomplete, or doesn’t match, donations may be automatically refunded to comply with those rules.

What a Refund Means for You

If You're a Giver

If your donation was refunded, the funds are returned to the original payment method used to give. Processing times can vary depending on your bank or card provider, but refunds typically appear within a few business days. If you’d like to support the campaign again, you may be able to do so once any verification or setup issues are resolved.

If You're a Campaign Owner or Recipient

If your campaign is still active, you can continue receiving donations as usual. A refunded donation won't affect your campaign’s overall standing or ability to accept future support. If you notice multiple refunds or aren’t sure why a specific donation was returned, feel free to reach out to us. Our support team can review what happened and clarify any next steps as necessary.
